Stop f***ing around and be true to yourself: how to make a living from art

After 35 years working in, for and founding some of the biggest agencies in advertising, Dave Buonaguidi (AKA Real Hackney Dave) left adland with a bang and totally rebuilt his career as a printmaker and artist.

In this session, Dave shares his experiences of making the leap to making a living from art: the importance of building a brand, approaching your career with a commercial eye and always, always having fun.

Dave will be interviewed by Emma Alexander, a commercial photography expert and founder of Wisern.

Meet your speakers

Dave Buonaguidi, AKA Real Hackney, is a printmaker and artist who combines the visual and verbal language of advertising and propaganda, with unique imagery and materials of found objects and ephemera.

Dave employs a reactive approach to his art, using screenprint and his bold typographic approach to push the boundaries of creativity and respond to cultural subjects and events in almost real-time, as if a publisher going to print.

Before becoming an artist, Dave worked in advertising for over 35 years, founding several creative agencies including St. Luke’s, 4Creative and Karmarama. He burned a lot of bridges on the way out, but doesn’t regret a thing.

Emma Alexander is a commercial photography expert and creative mentor. She is the founder of commercial production company Mother Bran, and Wisern, the mentoring platform for creatives. Emma has been bringing creative ideas to life for over 17 years, commissioning and producing creative campaigns for household names like Google, Diageo and Chivas Regal as well as emerging startups. She has worked across the globe and shot most of the things people generally advise against, including animals, children and A-list celebrities! Named as one of Pitch magazine's 100 Super-people in the creative industry for 2021, Emma has hosted workshops for General Assembly, Courier Live and Allbright Academy.
